ABB is a device for reducing the unbalanced mass of the optical disk drive. The major components of the disk drive can be divided into two categories: rotating and non-rotating parts. The rotating parts constitute “the equivalent rotor” which contains the disk, automatic ball balancer, and the rotor of the spindle motor. The non-rotating parts constitute “the equivalent stator” which consists of the foundation structure and the stator of the spindle motor, and pick-up head with its drive unit. The stator is modeled as a suspension system with three- dimensional motion in which the vertical motion results from the rocking motion of the disk. A simplified physical model and the coordinate systems for describing the non-planar motion of the equivalent rotor of an optical disk drive are first defined in this thesis. Secondly, employ Lagrange method to derive equations of motion for the rotor equipped with an ABB. Thirdly, use the commercial software Matlab to perform numerical simulation and analysis. From the results, the angle of the non-planar motion of the rotor equipped with ABB increases in comparison with that without ABB. Besides, the ABB’s dynamic balancing behaviors are influenced by the propertied of the rotor’s suspension. Finally, design guidelines are provided for ABB design engineers.
