The instruments adopted in the study were “Elementary School Student Money Attitude Scale” for student and “Elementary School Students’ Family Money Rearing Scale” for students’ parents. All available data related factors and study hypotheses were performed with the Descripitive Statistics , One-way MANOVA, Product-Moment Correlation , Multiple Stepwise Regression Analysis and so on. With reference to the four factors including personal factors such as sex ,age(grade); money experience factors such as allowance having, allowance amounts, habit saving and the consciousness of family economic situation ; family factors such as family socioeconomic status, parental education and occupation, family child birth-order, the number of the sibling and the degree of family money reaing ; media factor such as the degree of influence with TV commercials were further discussed. The findings and results of the study were as follows: 1.Sex is an significant factor in all dimensions of the money attitudes. The boy students tended to view money as “power- prestige”, ”success-achievement”, “esteem-respect”. The boy students had more positive money affection than the girl students. The girl student tended to use money carefully. 2.Age(grade)is an influential factor in the rest of dimensions except “money emotion”. The sixth graders tended to view money as “power-prestige” and the fourth graders tended to view money as ”success-achievement”, “esteem- respect”. The fourth graders made money budget more than the sixth students did. 3.The subjects who have no saving habit tended to view money as "power-prestige”, ”success-achievement”, “esteem- respect” and had more positive money affection. The subjects who had saving habit used money carefully. 4.There were significant differences and positive correlation between family money rearing and “money budget dimension”. The students with higher degree of family money rearing used money carefully. 5.There were significant differences and correlation between the influence with TV commercials and money attitudes. The students with higher influence of TV commercials tended to view money as “power-prestige”, ”success-achievement”, “esteem-respect“, had more positive money affection and careless money action . 6.Generally, sex, habit saving and the influence with TV commercials could effectively predict the real condition of money attitude. Above all, habit saving was the best predictor of “money budget action ” ; the influence with TV commercials was the best predictor of money cognition. Based on the above findings and results of the study, suggestions for the family, school education and future research were provided. Abstract
The main purposes of this study were (1) to investigate the present condition of the elementary school students’money attitudes. (2) to explore whether the elementary school students’ money attitudes vary with different personal factors, money experience factors, family factors and media factor. (3) to realize the relation between the elementary school students’ money attitudes with the personal factors ,money experience factors, family factors and media factor. (4) to analyze the personal factors, family factors, money experience factors and media factor to predict the condition of the elementary school students’ money attitudes. (5) to present concrete suggestions for the family, school education and future research according to the study results.
The study used a questionnaire survey method by means of the cluster sampling. The 1016 subjects were random sampled from the fourth, sixth graders in public elementary schools and theirs parents in Tainan city and Tainan county.
A factor analysis of the money attitudes revealed three components and five dimensions:“power-prestige”, ”success-achievement”, “esteem-respect ” belonging to money cognitive component ; money positive and negative emotion belonging to money affective component ; money budget action belonging to money behavioral component.
The findings and results of the study were as follows:
1.Sex is an significant factor in all dimensions of the money
attitudes. The boy students tended to view money as “power-
prestige”, ”success-achievement”, “esteem-respect”. The
boy students had more positive money affection than the girl
students. The girl student tended to use money carefully.
2.Age(grade)is an influential factor in the rest of
dimensions except “money emotion”. The sixth graders tended
to view money as “power-prestige” and the fourth graders
tended to view money as ”success-achievement”, “esteem-
respect”. The fourth graders made money budget more than the
sixth students did.
3.The subjects who have no saving habit tended to view money as
"power-prestige”, ”success-achievement”, “esteem-
respect” and had more positive money affection. The subjects
who had saving habit used money carefully.
4.There were significant differences and positive correlation
between family money rearing and “money budget dimension”.
The students with higher degree of family money rearing used
money carefully.
5.There were significant differences and correlation between
the influence with TV commercials and money attitudes. The
students with higher influence of TV commercials tended to
view money as “power-prestige”, ”success-achievement”,
“esteem-respect“, had more positive money affection and
careless money action .
6.Generally, sex, habit saving and the influence with TV
commercials could effectively predict the real condition of
money attitude. Above all, habit saving was the best
predictor of “money budget action ” ; the influence with TV
commercials was the best predictor of money cognition.
Based on the above findings and results of the study, suggestions for the family, school education and future
research were provided.
