There are six purposes of this study : (1)To investigate current situation of teacher in-service education and professional growth consciousness in the elementary school. (2)To investigate the meaning and idea of teacher in-service education. (3)To analyze the differences of background variables which can be used to explain the relationship between teacher in-service education. (4)To analyze teacher professional growth among different variables. (5)To examine correlations between teacher in-service education and professional growth in the elementary school. (6)To find resolution for suggestion of teacher in-service education and professional growth. By means of questionnaire, thesis is completed. The methods of research included literature analysis, questionary survey and interview. The 702 valid sample were selected through stratified random sampling. By using SPSS 8.0 for Windows, T test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation and multiple regression were used to analyze data. Major finding of the study are summarized below: 1.The conditions of teacher in-service education ranked the highest in "non formal in-service education" , the lowest in "formal in-service education" among all in the elementary school. 2.Teacher professional growth was at high level. 3.Overall, there were significant differences in the elementary school teacher in-service education with differences of background variables. 4.The teachers'' professional growth was differentiated by the background varied. 5.There were significant predictive correlation between teacher in-service education and professional growth. 6.There were significant power of teacher in-service education on professional growth. Concrete suggestions are presented based on the above conclusion: 1. To encourage teacher 2. To increase teachers the change of administration job for the chance of in-service education. 3. Good plantation of assist teacher self-education system. 4. To encourage the lasting teacher to continue teaching. 5. Set up a vacation system for teacher in-service education. 6. Establish the grade of teachers and exchange the certificates.
