Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺灣大學 === 土木工程學研究所 === 89 === The topic here is to figure out the relationship between characteristics of microstructure and mechanical properties of fault gouge with carbon. Not only the usual microstructures of fault gouge are discussed here, but the microstructures of sheared samples (by direct shear tests) are also mentioned. From the SEM photos of fault gouge, we can conclude that original samples of fault gouge are mainly composed of preferred orientation structure, shear lenses and turbostratic structures. The main characteristics observed in original gouge are disappeared in remolded samples. From Atterberg limit test, we can conclude that burned Hsin-Hua fault gouge has lower plasticity than unburned gouge. From the phenomenon mentioned above, a conclusion can be drawn that organic carbon might lift up the plasticity of gouge. From direct shear tests, gouge with graphite has lower strength than that without carbon. From the SEM photos of sheared samples, we can observe some characteristic that is the same with the field samples. By the same time, we can also observe that graphite flocked together near the sheared planes, and this phenomenon is almost the same as the scene we observe in the field.
