The causative relationship of serum uric acid with cardiovascular disease still remains a controversy in Western Countries. The objective of this study is to exam the association of serum uric acid and predicted cardiovascular risk from a cross sectional data of a local population. Method: The data of cardiovascular disease risk factors such as age, sex, systolic blood pressure, cigarettes smoking, total serum cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, diabetes, left ventricular hypertrophy by electrocardiography were collected from the people aged 40 to 74 years without prevalent cardiovascular diseases in three villages of I-Lan County from April 2000 to June 2001. The cardiovascular diseases prediction model developed from the Framingham Heart Study by Anderson et al was used to predict their incidence and death of cardiovascular diseases within 10 years. Then univariate and multivariate logistic regressions were done to test the association of serum uric acid and risk of cardiovascular diseases. Result: Serum uric acid is associated with cardiovascular disease risk of women in univariate analysis. The association became insignificant after adjusting for age. Serum uric acid is not associated with cardiovascular disease risk of men both in univariate and multivariate analysis. Conclusion: Uric acid is not an independent risk factor of cardiovascular disease. Wei-Chu Chie 季瑋珠 2001 學位論文 ; thesis 27 zh-TW
