These old photos and pictures contained various forms of signboards (as shown in Figure 1) and artwork. Initial investigations showed that there a study on this subject would be valuable. However, these old photos or pictures were very old, and the locations of the words in the signboards in the photos were very small. Thus, the relic maintenance method will be used with the aid of computer to conduct a rework based on professional judgement. This study shall be conducted in 3 stages. The first stage shall be concerned with the collection of historical photos and pictures during the Japanese Occupation in Taiwan. The second stage will involve scanning of old photos and words in signboards or advertisements with the use of relic maintenance method into the computer. Necessary revisions will be conducted. The third stage will involve catalogue and classification of signboard designs. This paper hopes to make public Taiwan's signboard during the Japanese Occupation to serve as a reference to the academic community relative to their study on hieroglyphic design. The study shows: 1. The appearance of Japanese on signboard was high. The pursuit target of commercial advertisement was primarily limited down to Japanese. 2. The development of many industries were brought into Taiwan during that period and flourished later on. 3. The concept of CIS for Taiwan enterprise evolved from the presentation of signboard during that period. 4. Signboards were designed and produced by product manufacturers, and given to retail store at no expense. During that time, the theme of (commercial) signboard presentation was mainly focused on the product itself. The stores’ names were overlooked, instead. The phenomenon was pervasive, especially for the foods and retail industry. 5. The rules of standard Chinese character were not specified yet, the fonts of Chinese character on vertical or horizontal signboards were different, and the concept of standard character were not unified. 林品章 2001 學位論文 ; thesis 136 zh-TW
