Hein’s novel “Dragon Blood” depicts the contemporary interpersonal relationship in the former East Germany. It gives us a perspective on how apathetic and puzzled its citizens were at that time. Writing in the capacity of a male, this novel featuring a female character gives us privy to the influence the contemporary feminist movement had on the relationship between men and women. The purpose of this thesis is to help people better understand the literature of East German era.
This thesis is composed of two parts. The first part has five chapters:
The first chapter introduces the life of Christopher and the age he lived in. In addition, a brief overview will be given on the literature development of the day in both Germany. The second chapter will be the brief summary of the scenario of “Dragon Blood”. The third chapter will discuss the origin of the name “Dragon Blood” and the later changes it has undergone. The fourth chapter analyzes the themes. Using perspectives of sociology, discussion on themes will proceed from the angle of three relationships (man to man, man to self and man to society). The fifth chapter will discuss the difficulties that were encountered in the process of translating the novel into Chinese, as well as the principles and methods of solution.
The second part of the thesis is appendix, containing the Chinese translation of “Dragon Blood”.
