Human perceive this visual information and commence a serial procedure of visual cognition, then we recognize this object. During this procedure, there are some factors which will cause the differences between the visual cognition and the real vision. This study is based on the ''Information Processing Model'', which has been the conventional model used by cognitive psychologists for decades. Through the discussion of the following process: pre-attention, sensory register, filter and attenuation model, pattern recognition, short-term store, and long-term store, we looking for the factors such as gestalt principles of organization, pattern recognition, mental imagery, and visual constancy, which may affect the results of visual cognition. Then we offer the cognition strategies to reduce the difference and to increase the accuracy of visual cognition. In this thesis we cite the related works of visual design to testify this visual cognition model and also enumerate some possible ways to apply the theory into the practical works of design. Finally, with the preceding visual cognition strategies and guidelines for visual design, we put the theory into practice and consummate a series of artworks, which were named ''RE-VIEWING A CITY''.
