However, little have we known about the use of portfolio assessment at junior high level. The purpose of this study is to investigate the implementation of portfolio assessment at an EFL junior high classroom in Taiwan. Students’ perceptions of portfolio assessment, their changes during and after the implementation, and their achievements of the instructional objectives were examined. The subjects of the study were a class of Junior II students in Chia-yi City. The data of the study were collected by two questionnaires, students’ portfolios and classroom observations. The questionnaires were used to gather information about the students’ learning backgrounds and their reactions and changes after the implementation of portfolio assessment. The results of the surveys were presented in frequencies and percentages. The students’ portfolios were collected to provide evidence of students’ achievements and developments. The portfolio data were analyzed by the method of content analysis. And the classroom observations were noted to support the survey results and illustrate students’ developments found in their portfolios. Several findings can be concluded from the study. The results show that (1) the students benefited from portfolio assessment, (2) students viewed portfolios assessment positively, (3) portfolios could be used in assessing and improving students’ speaking ability, and (4) portfolio assessment cultivated a cooperative learning atmosphere.
