Comparison of the Importance of Cargivr Needs and the Fulfilment in the Emergency Department

碩士 === 長庚大學 === 護理學研究所 === 90 === When patients enter the emergency room, it is usually with emergent physical needs. The caregiver whose emotional needs are not met, often accompany them. Yet, under extreme stress, these significant other’s ideas or feelings can be different with the health care provider’s. Because of these conditions, medical-legal problems can occur. Thus, concern for significant others well-being is imperative. The purpose of this study was to understand which needs are important to the caregiver of medical/surgical patients and compared these to health care provider’s values. Many variables were compared as we attempted to explained the different opinions. This is a cross-sectional study, at a southern regional teaching hospital, using a purposive sampling method, from January 5th 2002 to February 28th 2002. One hundred and fifty caregiver and forty two emergency room nurses were recruited. Two separated questionnaires were used, one for caregiver and one for nurses. The rankings varied from not important (0 points), to very important (3 points). The caregiver also ranked then fulfillment with not fulfilled (0 points) to completely fulfilled (3 points). The statistical tests used included, percentage, mean, standard deviation, rank, t-test and ANOVA. Results: (1) The caregiver believed the caregiver needs importance was between very important and important. Moreover patient health related information was ranked the most important. In general, nurses felt issues were more important than caregivers did, especially the physical setting. (2) Caregiver ’s fulfillment was between almost and somewhat fulfilled. They ranked patient health related information highest and ranked physical setting the lowest. Of all the caregiver need providers, nurses were ranked the major need provider (50.44%). (3) Factors that influenced the importance category included caregiver’s sex, caregiver’s marriage status, and nurse’s seniority in ER. Factors that influenced the caregiver’s fulfillment category included the caregiver’s marriage status, caregiver’s education, caregiver’s occupation, relation with the caregiver, human status, and the number of family. This study hopes to increase the emergency room health care provider’s quality of patient and caregiver care. It also helps to give the hospital administers information for further education of nurses.
