The railway crossings of the past severed the smooth flow along the city streets to cause obstructions on the roads, which meant a worsening of the urban traffic congestion. To overcome such problem, part of the passenger platforms and tracks have been relocated underground, which not only prevented the railway crossings from impeding traffic, but also made available large tracts of land for development, hence improving traffic and advancing urban growth. However, the location of the railway facilities underground complicates the traffic mechanisms. While the high-volume of users may prove to be a potential hazard in case of fire, with the fire-fighting and rescue efforts to be equally difficult. So research on emergency escape is important in light of assuring the safety of the public. The Taipei Main Station is designated as a special structure by the Executive Yuan, with its safety measures as per the NFPA stipulations. After being in use over a decade after its completion, the Taipei Main Station has seen its layout changed many times and now is considerably different from the original design. So it is important to examine the relationships between the characteristics of the layout and use of the key elements of the interior space and emergency escape. This study investigates the status quo of the Taipei Main Station based on its existing utilization (summary of architectural structure, proximity diagram, characteristics of the spaces and facilities, density of the users accommodated, and characteristics of the emergency escapees). The findings are used to evaluate the theoretical calculations of emergency escape. While such evaluations are used to further examine the relationships between the interior-layout of the Taipei Main Station, characteristics of the users, and times needed for emergency escape, as well as compared against the emergency-escape values of NFPA 130. Finally relevant improvement options are suggested based on such comparisons. Key words: Taiwan Railway Administration; Taipei Main Station; underground station; emergency escape; calculation of emergency-escape times. 江崇誠 2002 學位論文 ; thesis 68 zh-TW
