Eye discomfort and musculoskeletal illness are the main problems reported by visual display terminal (VDT) users. Computer monitor location is a key parameter of workstation design and has been shown to directly affect posture and visual condiderations. High monitor placement is considered a source of visual stress, whereas low placement is linked to musceloskeletal stress. Therefore, using ergonomic intervention to adjust and schedule the computer monitor placement become an important strategy of minimum both visual and musculoskeletal strains. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of the ergonomic intervention of exchanging CRT monitor position schedule on VDT users. Subjects for this study consisted of 16 participants (8 males and 8 females). All participants will be taught to perform a data-entry task in 60 minutes with random order. One independent variable, including nine CRT monitor position schedules (high to high, high to middle, high to low, middle to high, middle to middle, middle to low, low to high, low to middle, low to low) was evaluated. Criterion variables include near point accommodation (NPA), critical fusion frequency (CFF), EMG, subjective rating of visual and musculoskeletal strains, and subjective preference. The results showed that: (1) Generally, the monitor position schedule, from middle level to low level, is the best. (2) When the monitor position being adjusted from high level to low level, the visual stress decrease effectively. (3) When the monitor position is adjusted from high level to low level, the musculoskeletal strain decrease effectively.
