Some of the people who infected may become carriers, chronic hepatitis, and progress eventually into cirrhosis or even degenerate into hepatocellular carcinoma. Therefore, many resident population of Taiwan would suffer from hepatitis virus infection. In the present study, we measured the blood oxidative stress-related parameters (SOD, GPX, CAT, Se, Fe, Cu, Zn, MDA and uric acid) in patients with asymptomatic carrier, chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma due to the HBV or HCV infection and control subjects. Our results show that no significant differences on those parameters among asymptomatic carriers, chronic hepatitis groups and control groups were observed. However, the serum Zn concentration was lower and Cu/Zn was higher in patients with cirrhosis compared with asymptomatic carriers and control subjects. In addition, in hepatocellular carcinoma patients, the serum levels of SOD, CAT, Se, and Zn were significantly lower and the serum levels of Cu, Cu/Zn were significantly higher than those of in controls and/or carriers and/or chronic hepatitis groups. In conclusion, some of the oxidative stress-related parameters (such as SOD, CAT, Se, Zn, Cu, Cu/Zn) may be served as biomarkers as the severity of liver damage and oxidative stress increased.
