碩士 === 國立成功大學 === 政治經濟研究所 === 90 === The main purpose of the study is tp explore the following three major questions: (1) What are the factors that affect the performance of Taiwan hi-tech industry? (2) What are the factors that affect overseas investment of Taiwan hi-tech industry? (3) Are and to what extent the performance of Taiwan hi-tech industry and its overseas investment related? With the monthly data of Jan. 1991 to June 2001, regression models are established and dealed with EViews. Question one and two will be dealed with a singular equation regression model with time series data. On question three, simultaneous equation regression models will help to clarify the relationship of the two endogenous variables, the performance of Taiwan hi-tech industry and its investment in China. According to the regression result, the factors affect the performance of the hi-tech industry in Taiwan are Nasdaq index, which stands for world economy, and the exchange rate of NTD to Japanese Yen, and the relative government policies in the development of hi-tech industry. These three factors have significant positive effect. What affect the overseas investment of Taiwan hi-tech industry are the performance of Taiwan hi-tech industry, which has significant positive effect, and the exchange rate of invested country to major exporting country and that of NTD to the invested country, which both have significant negative effect. The regression result of simultaneous model shows that there are positive but insignificant relation between the performance of Taiwan hi-tech industry and its overseas investment. Compared with the singular equation, the positive but insignificant relationship between performance of Taiwan hi-tech industry and its overseas investment in China given by simultaneous regression model is more reliable.
