Author: Ming-Shun Wu Abstract The purposes of this study were to understand the current job stress of junior high school directors (JHSD) in Taiwan and to investigate the ways of coping for them. Questionnaires survey and interview methods were conducted in this study. The subjects included 597 directors from junior high schools in eight counties of central Taiwan, and 32 directors were visited. The statistics procedures include t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson product-moment correlation, and Canonical correlation analysis. The conclusions about this study are as following: 1. The job stress for directors of junior high schools is of a medium degree. 2. Among those five aspects of job stress, "job burden" came out at the top, followed by "personal relations" , "professional knowledge" , "decision making", and "mental conflict". 3. Among those five aspects of coping strategies, "thinking of reason resolve of problem" was most frequently used, followed by "to try to solve problems by oneself", "to search for assistance", "to change one''''''''s mood", and " to procrastinate". 4. Among those different grouping variables, 7 independents contributed to remarkable differences in the director'''''''' job stress. That is to say, different sex ,ages, years of serving concurrently in the present administrative, professional background, educational background, position, and different work positions all these lead to varying degrees of job stress. Moreover, the coping strategies also varied with 5 independents. In other words, different sex, ages, professional background, educational background, and different work positions-- all these factors result in varying coping strategies. 5. There were significant differences about ways of coping in different perception of the directors'''''''' job stress. 6. There were significant differences about stress and ways of coping in different perception of the directors'''''''' locus of control. 7. There were significant correlation between and the ways of coping for the directors of junior high schools. 8. There were significant canonical correlation among related attributes and stress and the ways of coping for the directors of junior high school. 9. There were 32 directors that accepted interview.
