Abstract
The crucial determinants of operating performance reside in the interaction between business strategies and industrial environment. Recent research in the field of strategic management have focused on “dynamic capabilities”, the ability of a firm to develop new capabilities in response to shifts in its external environment, as a significant source of competitive advantage. The competitive advantage of firms is seen as resting on distinctive processes (ways of coordinating and combining), shaped by the firm’s specific asset positions (such as the firm’s portfolio of difficult-to-trade knowledge assets and complementary assets), and the evolution paths that have been adopted or inherited (Teece et al., 1997). The research mainly investigates the fitness for dynamic capabilities of firms and dynamics of industrial environment. Moreover, we explore the impact of relationship between dynamic capabilities of firms and dynamics of industrial environment on the operating performance.
Unlikely previous research, the methodology of this research is not case study but large-scope empirical analysis. In order to examine the hypothesis proposed by this research, we will develop a draft questionnaire to measure the dimensions of dynamic capabilities. We will collect primary data (including attitude and fact data) from top 1000 firms in Taiwan by mailing questionnaire.
We conclude that dynamics of industrial environment will interfere the efficient model of dynamic capabilities of firms and the relationship between path, position and process. In lower dynamic industrial environment, operating performance is enhanced by its “operating routine” and “reaction capacity”. Finally, in high dynamic industrial environment, the efficient dynamic capabilities portfolio is “learning and innovating” and “specific asset positions”
