There is a lack of research on the traditional culture of couplets. In order to gain a better understanding of couplet culture, the current research focused on the oldest temple (Yen Ping Wang Temple) in Hualien to study the couplets with a holistic approach. The analysis of the couplets integrated the social and historical perspective to explore the development of temples in Hualien and the change of social structure after the Ching Dynasty. The results show that the couplets reflect the Chinese philosophy and the local residents’ journey of pursuing success. The study suggests the need of preserving the tradition of temples. The reestablishment of relics and conservation of couplets will inform the richness of local residents’ life history and culture. 林嵩山 2002 學位論文 ; thesis 257 zh-TW
