The purposes of this study were: (1) to explore the differences between the age and between gender in the reading comprehension ability and writing performance of the elementary school children; (2) to explore the relationships among the language ability, reading comprehension ability, and writing performance of the elementary school children; (3) to explore the prediction of the age, gender, and language ability to the reading comprehension ability of the elementary school children, and (4) to explore the prediction of the age, gender, language ability, and reading comprehension ability to the writing performance of the elementary school children. The samples of this study were 182 sixth and 150 fourth grade students randomly selected from the elementary schools in Taichung City and Country. The statistical analysis tools include descriptive analysis, two-way ANOVA, Pearson product-moment correlation method. The main findings of this study were concluded as follows: 1. In reading comprehension ability, the sixth graders are better than the fourth ones, and the girls are better than the boys. 2. In writing performance, the sixth graders are better than the fourth ones, and the girls are better than the boys. 3. There is high positive correlation between the language ability and reading comprehension ability. For each age and gender group, there is medium and high positive correlation between the language ability and reading comprehension ability. 4. There is medium positive correlation between the language ability and writing performance. For each age and gender group, there is medium positive correlation between the language ability and writing performance. 5. There is medium positive correlation between the reading comprehension ability and writing performance. For different groups, there are medium positive correlations between the reading comprehension ability and writing performance. 6. Children’s language ability and the age are effective predictors to their reading comprehension ability. 7. Children’s language ability is an effective predictor to their writing performance. According to the study result, the research has the suggestion in teaching for teachers and some issues for further studies.
