To identify factors in retirement decision of voluntarily retired elementary school teachers(VRESTs). 2. To understand VRESTs’ view ofthe retirement system . 3. To investigate VRESTs’ life planning afer retirement and levels of satisfaction w ith retired life. 4. To provide som e suggesttions for the adm inistrative authorities and teachers. This study had m ethodologically adopted questionnaire survey and sem i-structured interview. A self-designed questionnaire, “The Inventory of the Problems of Voluntarily Retired Elementary School Teachers”, was used as instrument. The subjects were 485 voluntarily retired elementary school teachers, retired in less than 2 years from Feb 1999 to Aug 2001, from Tainan county and. Tainan city 366 questionnaires were returned and found useful. The data were analyzed by using statistics of frequency distribution and Chi-square Test The main conclusions of this study were as follow s: 1. The main factors affecting early retirement decisions w re personal reasons and pressure resulting from work. 2. The main financial resource was pension 3. The financial status after retirement was mostly fair 4. O nly a portion of VRESTs were paid employment. 5. About one-fourth of VRESTs engaged themselves in volunteer works which were related to their own professional specialty. 6. M ajor recreational activities of VRESTs included sports, reading, watching TV, and traveling. 7. The most important thing for VRESTs was staying healthy and independently mobile. 8. M ost VRESTs found retired life to be satisfactory 9. Receiving half of the total amount of pension on retirement and the other half in monthly payment, and receiving monthly retirement pay were two ways of receiving pension payments .Both options were utilized and approved by the VREST population 10. The most appropriate age for retirement was from 56 to 60 11. The retirement system was a form o f social insurance assuring life quality after retirement 12. M ost VRESTS found the retirement system satisfactory 13. The exam ination and verification of retirement applications should consider applicants'' health conditions and w illingness to teach, and the number of year of service 14. If given a chance to choose occupation again, the m ajority of VRESTs would choose teaching as their profession. Based on the above conclusions, suggestions were offered to the administrative institutions, educational adm inistrative institutions and teachers. 1.to the adm inistrative institutions a. The age of compulsory retirement should be revised to be 60 b. VRESTs'' choice of how pension is received should be considered. c. Both VRESTs'' physical conditions and their w illingness to teach should be seriously considered in the process of exam ination and verificatio n of applications. 2.to the educational adm inistrative institutions a. Educational reform should be carried out in a progressive and step by step fashion, being m indful of teachers’ loading capacity. So that educational reform could be consolidated through the hands of elementary school teachers, and promoting educational reform effectively. 3.to the teachers a. Enhance know ledge in the area of inform ation technology, and upgrade one''s professional know ledge so as to reduce pressure from work. b.
