System operators, device manufactures, and system equipment vendors earned a lot in this wave. But the competition among system operators gets violent, system operators’ profit decreases gradually. So the system operators want to provide content service on mobile phone to find a new revenue source. The value chain of mobile network service is more complicated than mobile voice service. But system operator is a gatekeeper in the new value chain. That is why many companies pay much money to hold a 3G-spectrum license. In the process of development, system operators must collaborate with other players. But the relationship among different players is both cooperativ and competitive. The players include system operator, device manufacture, equipment vendors, content providers, mobile portals, media companies and etc. The best case of mobile network is NTT DoCoMo’s i-mode in Japan. However there are many specific characteristics to controbute the industry in Japan. System operators in other regions may not have the favor foctors. By the way of analysising the development of i-mode, it is contributory to know the system operators’s proper positioning in other regions. The reference resources of this thesis include industry reporters, business strategy journals, and the papers from many companies. Chapter 1 is an introduction. Chapter 2 analyzed the co-opetiton relationship between ststem operator and other players. Chapter 3 analyzed the system operotor’s proper positioning in mobile payment. Chapter 4 discussed Wireless-LAN’s thchnical characteristics and compared it with 3G. Chapter 5 analyzed the development of NTT DoCoMo’s i-mode in Japan. The thesis proposed a summary and some concise suggestions to mobile network system operators in chapter 6.
