Nineteen specimens were tested to study the effects of concrete strength f’c, area of primary tension reinforcement As, shear span-to-depth ratio a/d, nib depth-to-full beam depth ratio h/H, and horizontal loads Nu on ultimate shear strengths of dapped-end beams. Test results indicate that the design recommendations contained in Section 4.6.3 of PCI Design Handbook【1】 are overly conservative. The ultimate shear strengths predicted by Mattock’s【2】 proposals are primarily in good agreement with test results. Based on test results, the design recommendations proposed by Tsai【10】 can more accurately predict the shear strengths of high-strength concrete and normal-strength concrete dapped-end beams.
