This report provides the theoretical and experimental studies of the seismic retrofits of RC frames containing walls by using CFRP materials. Nine specimens were tested under simulated seismic actions. These nine specimens are one pure RC frame specimen, five “as built” RC frame specimens with 12cm RC walls, one RC frame specimen with a 15cm RC wall, and two RC frame specimens with brick walls. The frames of all specimens are detailed with ductile detailing. Three specimens of RC frames with 12cm RC walls and one of RC frame with brick wall are retrofitted by using CFRP materials.
Experimental observations and theoretical analyses indicate that the RC squat walls are the shear dominated mechanisms and the shear strength of the squat walls can be reasonably predicted by the softened strut-and-tie model. The test results of the retrofitted squat walls show that the CFRP with sufficient end anchorage is an effective retrofitting measure.
