The sample of this study consisted of 62 family members of patients in adult intensive care unit.They were selected by purposive sampling from adult medical-surgical intensive care unit of one medical center located in Taipei. In this study, the instruments included Family Perceived Stress Questionnaire, Family Coping Strategy Questionnaire, APACHE II score, and demographic data and characteristic of illness. The data were analyzed by mean, standard deviation, percentage, one-way ANOVA, post Scheffe test and Pearson product-moment correlation. The important results were summarized as follows: 1.The degree of the perceived stress in family members of patients in adult intensive care unit was at moderate-high degree. The greatest pereceived stress among family members was related to the characteristics of illness of patients in adult intensive care unit. 2.Most family members of patients in adult intensive care unit tended to adopt emotion-focused coping strategy. 3.In demographic data, it was found that family members’ sex and the stress related to the characteristics of patients’ illness have been significantly different. And, it was found that family member’s sex, and religion related to the problem-focused coping strategies have been significantly different. 4.In characteristic of illness data, it was found that pattern of admission and the environmental stress have been significantly different. And,it was found that they have no significant difference between the characteristic of illness data and the coping strategies . 5.In the study of the relationship between the perceived stress and coping strategies of family members, it was found that the whole perceived stress to emotion- focused coping strategy, the interpersonal stress to the whole coping strategy, the interpersonal stress to emotion-focused coping strategy, environmental stress to the whole coping strategy, the environmental to emotion-focused coping strategy, the individual stress to emotion-focused coping strategy have been significantly correlation. 6.The whole perceived stress,interpersonal stress, environmental stress, and individual stress correlate to coping strategy, especically emotion - focused coping strategy.
