Thirty-three subjects from Neurosurgery department of northern medical center in Taiwan were selected by convenience sampling. Instruments included Chinese Version of Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale and Chinese Version of Nowotny Hope Scale. Preoperative data was collected in first day before operation and postoperative data was collected sixth and fifteenth day after operation. Statistical analysis was done by using SPSS 9.0 software. The important results were as following: 1. The level of uncertainty was moderate before operation but decreased to lower level after the operation, they had significant difference. The major sources of uncertainty was ambiguity related to illness. 2. Based on different demographic characteristics and disease related, there were no significant difference in uncertainty in pre- and post-operation. 3. No matter before or after the operation, the level of hope was beyond moderate degree and the post-operation was better than the pre-operation, but the difference between them didn''t have meaning in statistics. The difference of hope was significant in sex in per-operation. Demographic characteristics and disease related were no significant difference of hope in post-operation. 4. Uncertainty had negative relation to hope but this didn''t have meaning in statistics during pre- and post-operation. Based on this research, we can design a systemic brain tumor clinical pathway in nursing intervention, and provide individualized and human care. The further study of nursing implications are needed. Key words: brain tumor, patients, uncertainty, hope Fung-Chi Ma 馬鳳歧 2002 學位論文 ; thesis 91 zh-TW
