This thesis also initiates a methodology of analyzing two-dimensional visual images. Concretely, the purposes of this thesis are as follows: 1. To explore moral elements in the contents of nine-year-integrated-curriculum textbooks, including visual images and texts. 2. To analyze the ways how nine-year-integrated-curriculum textbooks express moral contents. 3. To deliberate whether moral implications of visual images and discourse of texts are well-matched. The findings of this thesis are as follows: 1. The main element of morality expressed in Grade 1-9 Curriculum textbooks is philanthropism. 2. Different Learning Areas express the contents of morality in different manners. 3. The meanings of visual images do not totally correspond with what written discourse means, especially about the issues on sexism and lag of economic and social status. Based on the research findings, the following recommendations are proposed for teachers and researchers: 1. With regard to moral education and education (1) Teaching through Values across the Curriculum approach will make moral education more complete. (2) Paying more attention to any possible value transmission and hidden curriculum in the fields of schooling. (3) Including the examination of visual images into the procedures of textbooks censoring system. 2. With regard to future research (1) Visual methodologies should be an important approach to do educational research. (2) The research objects and scopes should be further expanded for more complete understanding of moral education in the stage of compulsory education. (3) The themes for further research should be extended to different forms of visual images. (4) Another research methods should be integrated into visual images analysis approaches for studying both the site of production and the site of audience of visual images.
