In the thesis, mechanisms of microbe inactivation and characteristics of gas discharge are first discussed to determine the pulse parameters. Then, three types of generators for generating high pulsed electric fields are reviewed, and an interleaved forward converter is proposed. The primary feature of the proposed converter is in generating low-frequency high-voltage pulses without needs of switches with high-voltage ratings. As compared to a single high-voltage switch, the power devices connected in series gain the merits of lower cost and more flexibilities in hardware design. Therefore, three types of gate driving circuit for driving the series connected switches which consist of six power MOSFETs are proposed.
