PIM-SM (Protocol Independent Multicast) is an efficient multicast routing protocol on Internet. However, the current PIM-SM cannot support QoS capability, which results in the following drawbacks: The PIM-SM only provides multicast services via the existing best-effort unicast routing protocol, RIP or OSPF, to calculate route cost when establishing multicast trees. Therefore, the multicast trees may probably be established on heavily-loaded links when the network loading is large. The existing PIM-SM platform can not guarantee bandwidth usage of the multicast tree. The Switchover proposed in PIM-SM will release the heavy loading of the shared tree, but can not fully balance the loading of the shared tree. In this thesis, we propose an architecture of PIM-SM over OSPF-TE/MPLS to solve the mentioned problems and provide QoS guarantee. The proposed PIM-SM/MPLS architecture takes advantage of the QoS characteristics of OSPF-TE and MPLS to support the QoS capabilities of load balance and bandwidth guarantee. We discuss how to cooperate the following subsystems, PIM-SM, OSPF-TE, and MPLS well to support QoS capabilities. We further extend the PIM-SM functionalities and modify the associated protocols to achieve RSVP-TE-like signaling capabilities. Keywords: QoS, TE, MPLS, PIM-SM, OSPF-TE.
