Grandparents' involvement in preschool grandchildren's lives and parents' perception of parenting competence

碩士 === 朝陽科技大學 === 幼兒保育系碩士班 === 91 === Grandparents usually play very important roles in their married children’s families and they provide various supports .In many cares, grandparents are the most frequent persons to take care of young children in double-income families. How grandparents’ involvement in their grandchildren’s lives affects parents , however, has not been discussed. Grandparents’ improper involvement might intervene in parents’ discipline to their children, and may influence parents’ sense of parenting competence. The purpose of this study is to understand the relations between grandparents’ involvement in their grandchildren’s life and parents’ perception of parenting competence. Specific, the purposes of study is threefold . First, to understand parents’ perception of grandparents’ involvement in their grandchildren is lives. Second, to discuss the relations between the demographic variables (including family’s background, grandparents’ background, and the family’s reactions) and grandparents’ involvement in the lives of their grandchildren. Third, to understand the relation between different variables and parent’s sense of parenting competence. Applying the cluster sampling method, this study surveyed parents of 8 kindergartens in three township areas in Taichung County, namely, Da-li ,Tai-ping, and Wu-fong. 443 parents formed the study sample. The study find out the higher grandparents’ involvement which includes live discipline teaching, and emotional and behavioral problem handling in their grandchildren’s live is, the lower parents’ parenting competence is. The higher grandparents’ involvement which includes lives discipline teaching in their grandchildren’s live is, the lower parents’ parenting competence is. The higher grandparents’ involvement which includes entertainment accompanying in their grandchildren’s live is, the higher parents’ parenting competence is. According to the results, the suggestions to the grandparents should weight their involvement in grandchildren’s behavior teaching , and help parents to construct good modus lives of the grandchildren , help them handle the emotional and behavior problems of the grandchildren to raise parents’ parenting competence. Grandparents can take more active anticipates in grandchildren’ leisure lives. Parents and grandparents should establish a harmony relationships between each other. The suggestions to policies is design and promote grandparents parenting education policy. Enhance the functions of the preschool institutes and training of the people in the institutes. Provide appropriate communication channels for every family member by technical broadcasting channels.
