The study area is located within the southwestern portion of the Central Mountain Range starting off from the Western Foothills within Ping-tung region. Analysis of the aerial photographs indicates that the topographic lineaments are either distributed on all sides of the drainage system or tend to intersect the river network at a specific angle. It seems clear that the development of the drainage system is intricately dependent on the geologic structure of the region. The relationship between the spatial distribution of the topographic lineaments and the drainage system has very much in related. Furthermore, as baseflow analysis between two hydrometric stations indicates, the baseflow in the lower stream of south Ai-liao branch is on average 3% greater than discharge on the upper stream of the river. It is regared that there probable exists the essential groundwater resources of the region. Besides, it contributed as main source of the baseflow. In conclusion, according to this study, the combination of aerial photographs lineament analysis, stream patterns investigations and baseflow analysis can both simplify and provide more detail for groundwater resources investigation in terrains with complex landform.
