Abstract
The purpose of the study is to look into (1) the status quo of the job stress on the junior high school teachers, their responsive strategy, and their attitude of retirement, (2) the comparative discrepancies in the above-mentioned three aspects in background variables, and (3) the correlations between their stress and coping, between their stress and retirement attitude, and between their coping and retirement attitude, so as to offer the reference to the teachers, during the education reform, for their mental adaptation and stress relieving, as well as to improve the effectiveness of education in junior high school.
The study uses the questionnaire based on the random-sample approach. The 518 subjects are selected from over-40-year-old male/female teachers of various junior high schools in Taichung County, Taichung City, Changhua County and Nantou County, according to the magnitude of each teacher’s own school. The tool of the study is the questionnaire on the junior high school teachers’ attitude of retirement, which has been designed by the writer. SPSS, a software of social science statistics, is applied to the gathered data to conduct t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Canonical correlation analysis, so as to testify the thesis.
The design and its application in the study lead to the following significant findings:
1. The over-all job stress on the junior high school teachers is medium in strength.
2. The major sources of the stress are first Teaching, and then Students’ behavior,
Heavy workload, Administrative influence, and Incompetence in profession.

analysis, and then Self-adaptation, Soliciting support, and Elusion.
4. The junior high school teachers’ attitude of retirement are neither positive nor
negative.
5. As to the stress, in background variables, a discrepancy exists not in the
teacher’s age, education, duty and school campus, but in sex, his/her own duty and
the magnitude of his/her own school.
6. As to the coping to the stress, in backgrounds variables, a discrepancy exists
not in the teacher’s sex, age, education, duty, but in the magnitude of his/her own school and school campus.
7. As to the attitude of retirement, in background variables, a discrepancy exists
not in the teacher’s duty and school campus, but in sex, his/her age, education and
the magnitude of his/her own school.
8. A striking discrepancy exisits in the general coping strategies of the teachers
who suffer different stress.

teachers who suffer different stress.
10. There is canonical correlation between the junior high school teachers’ stress
and their coping strategy. Through the first canon, Students’ behavior,
Incompetence in profession, Teaching, Administrative influence and Workload
are used to explain Rational analysis, Self-adaptation, Problem solving of the five responsive strategy variables. Through the second canon, Teaching, Workload, Incompetence in profession, and Administrative influence are used to explain Soliciting support and Problem solving of the five responsive strategy variables.
11. There is canonical correlation between the junior high school teachers’ stress
and their attitude of retirement. Through the first canon, Coping strategy,
Attitude of retirement, Teaching, Incompetence in profession, Workload,
Administrative influence are used to explain the positive attitude of the two
retirement variables. Through the second canon, Students’ behavior and
Incompetence in profession are used to explain the positive and negative attitudes
of the two retirement variables.
12. There is canonical correlation between the junior high school teachers’ coping
strategy and their attitude of retirement. Through the first canon,
Self-adaptation, Problem solving, Soliciting support are used to explain the
positive attitude of the two retirement variables. Through the second canon,
Rational analysis, Self-adaptation, Problem solving are used to explain the
negative attitude of the two retirement variables.
With the findings and conclusion, the study offers the suggestions for the reference of the education authorities, the junior high school teachers and the other researchers.
