Based on a long-term perspective, this study intends to address this issue by using grobal data covering 165 countries in the period of 1991 - 2000, and by employing a multiple regression model. The result shows that there exists a significant positive relationship between defense expenditure per citizen and income per capita. Such a result indicates that, the stronger a nation’s economic strength, the stronger a nation’s demand for defense security. To test for the stability of my results, this research also reexamines the same issue, by using military modernization, the size of defense budget, and military defense ability as alternative variables of defense security demand. The results of the above sensitivity analysis largely remain unchanged. My findings not only entend the span of longitudinal observation in this area over a single country but also lend support to the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory.
