description 碩士 === 國立高雄師範大學 === 工業科技教育學系 === 91 === A Study of Junior High School Students’ Personal Adaptability In Chiayi City Abstract The objectives of this research study were to understand the personal adaptability of junior high school students in Chiayi City, analyze the correlation of gender, grade, and family socio-economic status to their adaptability, discuss the factors affecting their adaptability, and provide suggestions to related educators, counselors, and family members to facilitate healthy adaptabilities of junior high school students. This study was conducted by means of questionnaire survey. The 404 research subjects were students randomly selected from eight Chiayi City junior high schools. The ‘Junior High School Students Personal Adaptability Survey’ included two parts: personal profile and adaptability chart, and was designed to measure the students’ ‘worrisome-optimistic’, ‘anxious-comfortable’, ‘introvert-outgoing’, ‘lack of confidence-confident’ scales. The adaptability of ‘anxious-comfortable’ was inferior. 1.The junior high school students showed high adaptability to ‘introvert-outgoing’, followed by ‘worrisome-optimistic’, ‘lack of confidence-confident’. And ‘anxious-comfortable’ was the lowest. 2.The adaptability of junior high school students showed significant disparity in gender. The results showed that male students were superior in adaptability of ‘worrisome-optimistic’ and ‘anxious-comfortable’. 3.The adaptability of junior high school students showed no significant disparity in grade. Students of all three grades showed high score on ‘anxious-comfortable’ and indicated that they all had serious problems in adaptability of ‘anxious-comfortable’. 4.The adaptability of junior high school students showed significant disparity in family socio-economic status. Parents in middle or upper socio-economic status tended to have more capabilities planning for their children’s future, and thus the children had more opportunities to encounter the society and cultural shock. In Taiwan, his/her diploma judges a person; hence, the pervasive choice of senior high school education after graduating from the junior high school was due to expectation from the society, the parents, and oneself. Blindly led by the further education goal, parents of middle or upper socio-economic status forced their children to talent schools or cram schools. The high pressure lay upon the students from middle or upper socio-economic status families resulted in repellence and lower adaptability than students did from low socio-economic status families. 5.The means of four adaptability items in the ‘Junior high school Students Adaptability Survey’, the score of ‘anxious-comfortable’ ranked the highest and exhibited disturbance to students’ emotional state. The severity of disturbance was to be determined by the score. Those students may display the emotional problems physically and were often isolated, helpless, and ignored by their peers. They may even skip school given the excuse of illness. A further look at their school life revealed that they were secluded and crowded out by others. It may be more serious when the long-term pressure accumulated into real illness. The school should take precautionary measure and offer students EQ classes to encourage self-exploration, self-acceptance, and self-adaptation. 6.Due to the lasting belief in college entrance, students were forced to experience pressure and frustration in schoolwork and college entrance exams after entering the junior high school. Many students had exhibited poor adaptability when they entered the junior high school. The pressure and frustration they experienced were increasing serious. Relieving students’ pressure from the schoolwork would require policies implemented by the government and followed by the schools, and reflection on the belief in college entrance by the parents. The results of education should not only reflect by scores. Keywords: personal adaptability、worrisome、optimistic、anxious、comfortable、introvert、outgoing、lack of confidence、confident.
