Summary:碩士 === 國立屏東師範學院 === 國民教育研究所 === 91 === The main purposes of this study were: (1)To investigate English competence and Chinese characters reading of elementary children; (2)To examine if the children with different gender, English learning experience, school area, social economic status(SES), grade, and parents supporting to learning English have different English competence and Chinese characters reading; (3)To analyze the predictors of English competence; and (4)To examine the English competence of the different areas children if divide the factor of gender, SES, English learning experience, and parents supporting to learning English. The subjects were 494 elementary children randomly selected from grades 1st and 3rd in Pingtung county. For the investigation, three questionnaires were used: (1)A Graded Chinese Characters Reading Test (2)An English Competence Scale (3)A Parents Supporting to Learning English Questionnaire Statistical methods employed in this study were: (1)t-test (2)One-way ANOVA (3)One-way Multivariate of Variance (4)Multiple Regression (5)Two-way ANOVA And the major findings include: (1)The elementary children with different grade, SES, and English learning experience have significantly different English competence. (2)The elementary children with different gender, school area, SES, English learning experience, and parents supporting to learning English have significantly different Chinese characters reading. (3)The most effective predictor of English competence was Chinese characters reading. (4)The English competence of elementary children were different between school areas. In conclusion, the researcher suggested the education concerned authorities and further studies on this subject.
