He had all the ambition and talent ready to serve the general public but never succeeded in the literary world and turned into a copy writer for others. Such an embarrassing situation did not take away his talent; instead he took this opportunity to bring his skill to another level coupled with the integration with his unique personality The main purpose of this study is to clarify the meaning of literary works for paintings and then to study Hsu Wei’s literary works related to such an area. The study goes on to discuss Hsu Wei’s literary works for painting in forms, content, and characteristics. From literary works for painting, the study further explores the role taken by painting and to analyze the cultivation of Hsu Wei’s painting ideas to examine his effectiveness in combining painting and literature. The following is the summary of this study: 1.The introduction states the purpose, methods used, structure, study area and limitation, and the justification for this study. 2.The chapter develops and studies the evolving of literary works for paintings since the Chyn-Dynasty to the Ming-Dynasty as a foundation for understand the background for Hsu Wei’s work, which is this study’s foundation. 3.The family background of Hsu Wei’s works is analyzed along with his personal experience, education background, and the lifestyle and literary monuments during the era he was living in to understand Hsu’s unique personal value and taste in paintings. 4.The chapter analyzes Hsu’s literary works for painting by classifying his works based on content differences and quality to further study how Hsu demonstrates a variety of genre and his idiosyncrasy in the works. 5.The chapter states Hsu’s ideas behind his works, including the original sources of inspiration, perspectives on paintings and skills, and presents the creativity and technique shown in Hsu’s works, showing how literature and painting can work hand in hand. 6.This chapter characterizes with examples how Hsu put his theory of painting into practice. From the free and lively expression and systematic structure of Hsu’s works, we see how painting and literature make good company for each other. 7.This summary chapter concludes with a discussion of Hsu’s influence on later artists and scholars in terms of Hsu’s idea on literary works for painting. From this study, we can see Hsu’s troubled life did affect much his creative works. Hsu’s easy lifestyle and free spirit creativity filled his works with great originality and popularity alike, making them no longer difficult or inaccessible to the public. The most outstanding feature of his works as perceived by the public may be the layout and design of his painting. Hsu introduced poems into his paintings to convey the poetic spirit, and his introduction of calligraphic strokes further underscored his painting skills. This balanced, harmonious combination of literature and painting led Hsu’s works to a historic peak among scholar-painters, which is the reason why Hsu’s works can stand the test of time and live on forever.
