| Summary: | 碩士 === 國立屏東師範學院 === 國民教育研究所 === 91 === The theme of a novel is the soul of its structure. For a young adult novel, the theme is usually moral and uplifting. To be successful as a young adult novel, it is necessary that the novel is suitable for their target age and that the themes of the novels are effectively developed﹒
The aim of this thesis is to search for the themes displayed in Lee Tong’s young adult novels. The researcher intends to study how Lee Tong combines characters with the environmental atmospheric elements of novels in order to transmit his thoughts to young readers in the context of a story, smoothly developed.
There are seven chapters in this thesis.
Chapter 1“Introduction”: It describes the motives, purposes, ranges, limits, procedures and methods of seeking this thesis﹒
Chapter 2“Young adult novels and their Theme”: Analysis of the theories of young adult novels and their themes are presented. In the beginning, it focuses on essential characteristics of novels, particularly plots, fictions, emotion, and prose. In the second part, there is a general discussion of the definition, functions, characteristics, elements and expressive methods of the young adult novels. Finally, the importance, characteristics and expressive methods of the themes are discussed.
Chapter 3“Analysis of the themes of Lee Tong’s young adult novels”: First, there is an overall analysis of Lee Tong’s young adult novels. Second, four novels form the main focus of some extended discussions. They are Eagle Flying , New Thurible of Swu Fong Er , Seeing Chrysanthemum Again and Young Gamalan﹒There are three sections－－「plot summary」,「character and theme」and「direction of theme displaying」－－in this chapter﹒
Chapter 4“Preparatory period before theme displayed”: The author maps the background in order to reveal the themes. There are three parts：「mapping the character’s psychology」, 「describing the environment of problems」 and「constructing an uneasy atmosphere」.
Chapter 5“Development period during theme displaying”: While presenting themes, the author develops a literary art which allows them to be naturally displayed through plot development. There are three directions of focus as follows：「producing a remarkable effect through the characters」, 「creating the environment for the themes」and「creating an enhanced atmosphere.」
Chapter 6“Culminating period after theme displayed”: This chapter discusses the relationship between the characters’ psychology, environment and atmosphere﹒The three main points are: 「characters’ psychology after understanding」,「combination of theme and environment」and「moving atmosphere」.
Chapter 7“Conclusion and suggestions”. The first part is the conclusion of this thesis. The second is the suggestions for other researchers.
In this thesis, it is revealed that the themes of Lee Tong’s young adult novels are clear and can be identified. It is essential to present themes. The author combines characters with environment and atmosphere in order to make readers feel moved. From the studies of Lee Tong’s four novels, it is seen that the development of the themes are through contrast.
Young readers read these works for enjoyment, but the ultimate purpose is to leave the themes in their minds.
