Chen''s concept of "Essence of painting" and its bearing on his work are examined and assessed. The concept is also used as a point of reference for studying Chen''s other yet to be defined paintings. We propose a concept of “Medium” as the basis for analyzing the forms of Chen''s works. Two approaches are taken in this study. One is to consider painting as a noun state (as an object), and the other is to consider it as a verb state (as a dynamic structure). When a painting is viewed in its noun state, the coloring, tactile, and perception of space are investigated. When viewed in its verb state, the material components of the painting serve as the ground for explaining how a painting exists as a painting, and through its dynamic structure we find out the basic factors which constitute a painting. When Chen uses materials which cross over the boundary of conventional media and his works are still considered as “paintings”, then we may have found a meeting point between “painting” and “modern multiple-materials artworks” (e.g. installation art). 黃海鳴 廖仁義 2002 學位論文 ; thesis 186 zh-TW
