There are more and more contract migrant workers working in the cities worldwide. With their restricted legal status and rigorous working condition, migrant workers’ interaction with the cities are often considered as temporary or marginal. This thesis instead is a case study on a Filipino migrant workers’ community space- named ChungShan, in Taipei city. Based on an anthropological research method, the thesis unpacks how Filipino migrant workers form a community space in Taipei on their holidays. The thesis also analyzes how ChungShan opens up new urban issues in Taipei, and brings up possible changes in Taiwan. There are currently more than 70,000 Filipino migrant workers in Taiwan. Their city lives are largely constrained by national policies during the workdays. However, on Sundays, when thousands of Filipino migrant workers have their day off, they create and engage in all kinds of economic, social and cultural activities. They form a community space with distinct transnational characteristics in the city. The formation of ChungShan also opens up new urban issues. It challenges local people’s original perception on spatial boundary. This casts potential threats for new forms of urban conflicts. Nevertheless, there are also articulations among different social actors. The social groups in ChungShan, local NGOs and the Taipei City government, have begun to facilitate social dialogues in the city. This might shape the future urban policies and practices.
