However, even the same politician, different media has different angles and aspects to present him or her due to the survival of the fittest, ideology, market demands or political pressure, etc. Mass media can cooperate with politicians by pragmatic situation, but sometimes they may also compete with each other for their own benefits. Consequently, the images of politicians are much cosmetic by media. As readers or audience, how can we find out the real images of politicians possibly? Perhaps we may achieve it by absorbing extensive information of various sources. This dissertation is discussed the image of the former president Li Teng-hui in media. It is divided into two parts to research the image. One is by text analysis and the other by interview. The targeted media is focused on the three best-selling newspapers in Taiwan, United Daily News(UDN), China Times(CT)and Liberty Times(LT). Let us see how such three media report Li Teng-hui’s important events after his retirement from presidency, including Li’s press conference for visiting Japan, his 2nd visit of Cornell University and the 5th election of Legislators and magistrates, totally 315 articles in 19 days for the three media. In the part of interviewing, I specially covered senior reporters or editors who followed up Li Teng-hui''s stories in several years or had relevant books about Li in publishing. Let the reporters/editors give comments on Li’s political deeds after his retirement. I collected such information and made a contrast with the text analysis, and then tried to discover the actual meaning behind the image of Li Teng-hui by different media. The fundamental theories in this dissertation are based on academic points of views about charisma of leadership, images, populism and ethnic consciousness. From the result of the research, I discovered that UDN was the media against Li Teng-hui apparently. Most Li''s behaviors were criticized by UDN. In the beginning of Li''s leaving his post, UDN still put the focus on Li. However, by the time of Li''s populace longer and longer, UDN''s criticized Li less and less. Compared with the UDN, LT was a media supporting Li most. LT respected Li Teng-hui much more than the incumbent president Chen Shui-bian. Moreover, LT normally used prejudiced or extreme terms, such as “the communist hound”, “inhumanity”, “Taiwan betrayers”, etc. in editorials, readers writings even in news reporting. The style of LT was not concentrated on the balance of reporting but emphasized straight-out words and local dialect to cater to readers of the central and southern island. CT was rather impartial one among the three targeted media. CT reported Li''s events in balance comparatively. From this research, above 78% of CT’s news was neutral, higher than 62% of UDN and 53% of LT. Unlike UDN’s criticism or LT''s flattery, CT handled Li''s news by “calm treatment”. CT did not comment Li’s actions directly but showed Li''s conducts in the presence of readers and let them judge. CT was also the only one to report Li’s events least among them. The three media had so different treatments for Li''s news not only for the different media’s background, ideology, but also for the market consideration. As readers/audience, we should not choose some special media in habits but try to contact different media and realize why and what they want to tell us. Furthermore, we cannot rely on any mass media completely but always cultivate ourselves to think independently. It is the only way for readers/audience not to be enchanted by media. Even more, we may get something interested if we probe into the real meaning under the veil of politicians'' images. If so, the mass media would not pollute us, and we do not be exploited by politicians as well. I hope that is a little contribution for this dissertation. 周陽山 2003 學位論文 ; thesis 170 zh-TW
