The data was collected through the community wide baseline survey of the project of “The Pilot Program for the Development of Long-Term Care System” which is directed by Dr. Wu, the professor of the Institute of Public Health and Management of National Taiwan University. The functionally disabled adults over 20 years old and their main family caregivers in the areas of San-Ying and Chiayi city were visited and interviewed according to the structural questionnaires. The response rate of visiting was 61.5%, which included 2,205 functionally disabled adults and 1,946 main family caregivers. Almost of main family caregivers experienced caregiving burdens, only 1.2% never experienced. Concerning the caregiving burdens, the dimensions of entire caregiving burdens were 7.1% serious and 37.1% light (only serious and light burdens were given here), physical burdens were 26.9% serious and 43.3% light, financial burdens were 25.0% serious and 48.0% light, emotional burdens were 4.3% serious and 48.8% light, and relational burdens were 2.0% serious and 82.3% light. This result revealed that the number of serious-burden family caregivers were much less than that of light-burden family caregivers. In contrast, time burdens were another story. Light burdens were less than the others. (40.7% medium, 28.0% light) Based on the analysis of multinomial logistic regression, the full-time job was significantly related to the dimensions of entire caregiving burdens, physical burdens, emotional burdens, relational burdens, and time burdens (odds ratio were 2.314, 1.486, 2.478, 1.532, and 1.619, respectively). Hence, family caregivers who have full-time job could experience more serious burdens than nonworking ones. The part-time job was only related to emotional burdens (odds ratio was 0.617). Otherwise, there are still other statistically significant factors, such as health status of functionally disabled adults and family caregivers, caregiving time, and support resources. Based on our analysis in this study, we give a conclusion that the working status of family caregives is correlated with their caregiving burdens. Therefore, we suggest the government consider this main factor during formulating the strategy for Long-Term care policy. Since working family caregivers have significantly serious burdens than nonworking ones in the dimensions of physical burdens, emotional burdens, relational burdens, and time burdens, the government should concern about the working family caregivers’ supports and special needs of these dimensions.
