In script creation, playwright Yao Ye Wei borrowed extensively the theories of theatrical aesthetics from the West and made innovations to the Western traditions. His artistic exploration is fully realized in the 14 play scripts he produced in the beginning of the 1960s. Whether the ideas are drawn from historical events, legends, or modern stories, Yao’s attempt to break free from the shackle of old traditions and to pursue his own artistic vision is evident in all of his works throughout this period. Among the important scripts published in the early stages of Yao’s script writing career, “Jade Kuan-Yin” is most frequently performed and was even adapted into the movie “Jade Kuan-Yin”. And in every single time of these performances, the play received wide recognition and high praises. This paper intends to investigate the script version of “Jade Kuan-Yin” as collected in the Six Types of Plays by Yao Ye Wei. The theories provided by Aristotle in On Poetics as well as the movement theory and the temporal-spatial perspective discussed in the Principles of Drama by Yao Ye Wei will be used as the research framework and the basis for the analysis of the plot structure, character development, dialogues, and the theme of the play under investigation.
