The proposed controller will initially output a maximum voltage to the sled motor and maintain this maximum voltage as long as possible until the pick-up head is driven close to the target track followed by a braking enforcement. The braking mechanism will slow down the speed of pick-up head and finally park the pick-up to the adjacent neighborhood of target track. The short seek controller will then take over the control task finishing the track seeking. For different ranges of target tracks, the genetic algorithm will be applied to learn the braking start-up track and the following sled motor control strategy driving the pick-up head to the target track in a smooth way. Besides,the reference signals of a long-seek servo controller in CD-ROM and DVD-ROM are based on the speed profile. Engineers usually tune the speed profile and starting voltage of optical disk driver’s sled motor by trial and error method. In this paper, the Genetic Algorithm will be utilized to design a on-line auto-tuning mechanism. With this mechanism, speed profiles as well as the start-up voltage of sled motor will be automatically tuned with a computer.
