In light of the above circumstances, the current research aims to study the cross-strait political news reported by Taiwanese press. Specifically, this research focuses on the change of the context and discourses of Cross-strait political news on Taiwanese press from 1988 to 2000. One of the main purposes of this research is to look at whether news coverage on cross-strait affairs changes over time according to the trend of cross-strait policies. In the current research, cross-strait political news reported on Liberty Times and United Daily News are analyzed by utilizing method of content analysis in terms of news resources, numbers, topics, and copyediting. News discourse analysis is utilized to examine the editorials for both newspapers in order to investigate their viewpoints and propositions. Last but not least, in-depth interviews are employed to the gatekeepers of both newspapers for understanding the process and production of the making of cross-strait political news. The results of the current research indicate that the cross-strait political news in both Liberty Times and United Daily News change along with Lee Teng-hui government policies and cross-strait relations. The research findings show that the news coverage in negotiation period(1988~1995)is much more abundant in quantity than desolate period(1996~2000). The results also show that over time, the news topics for both newspapers change from reporting cross-strait affairs to ideological debates; and the news resources mostly come from authoritarian organizations for both newspapers. The results of the news discourse analyses show that Liberty Times and United Daily News were both against 「one country two system」policy; and both advocated the idea of developing cross-strait diplomatic relations. However, they held different stands on the debates of 「one china policy」;and 「independence or unification」.Moreover, the results of in-depth interviews of the gatekeepers for both newspapers indicate that newspaper ownership has definitely the say on how the press report the cross-strait political news in Taiwan.
