The intent is to explore the possible affordances provided by the physical environment in order to support the users’ motivations and needs. People with different motivations may perceive different affordaces provided by the very same physical objects; likewise, different objects may also provide same affordances for the similar needs. The relationship in the linkage between motivation and supporting objects provides great opportunities for environmental design. The first chapter is derived from the observation on a bus stop, and the result is linked to Gibson’s idea of affordance. Chapter two involves literature review regarding the relationships between users’ needs and the supporting objects. The resulting events and the use of objects are discussed. The third chapter includes the record of the pedestrian park based on observations. The fourth chapter includes conceptual development of object uses, and models of affordances that may provide as well as prohibit certain activities. Finally two design schemes are developed to demonstrate the possible combinations of events and affordance in the pedestrian park. It is concluded that people with different perceptions may see the environment differently, and use the environment differently. It is our job as an environment designer to provide more considerate and sensitive possibilities for people with different needs. Liu, Chi-Wen 劉綺文 2003 學位論文 ; thesis 67 zh-TW
