Along with the increase of elderly population and the need of society, the number of nursing home increased from 29 to 211 between 1997 and 2002. However, since the nursing homes have not been covered in the National health insurance nor standard payments have been set up, the issue of applying management strategy to improve performance should be emphasized. This research adopts the classification for management strategy proposed by Miles & Snow in 1978. The strategies are defender, prospector, analyzer and reactor. The management performance uses the Balanced Scorecard proposed by Kaplan and Norton in 1990. The four phases of the Balanced Scorecard are finance, customer, internal process and learning growth. This research applied questionnaires and interviewed experts to collect all the necessary data. This research found that different management strategies affect the performance of the nurse homes. The sequence of strategy from good to bad is prospector, defender, analyzer, and reactor. Besides, we also found that the management performance is not significantly affected by the characteristics of the nurse homes such as public or private; subsidiary organization or private owned; and the scale of the nurse homes. This research also found that the larger the nurse homes the better the performance. It is also found that 37.3% of the nurse homes adopts the strategy of defense, while 38.7% of the nurse homes adopts the strategy of analysis. This means that most nursing homes adopt conservative strategy. Since the strategy of prospector resulting in better performance, it is recommended that the nursing homes should adjust their management strategy to the strategy of prospector gradually to avoid the possibilities of out of control in nursing homes.
