| Summary: | 碩士 === 國立雲林科技大學 === 視覺傳達設計系碩士班 === 91 === Text on routes board of the bus front is the most clear and important sign to be differentiated in a long distance. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effective legibility of the different viewing distance and colors collocation on the routes board of bus in Kaohsiung area. There are three steps in this study：The first step is the investigation and comparison with numeral typefaces of routes board at the front of the bus in Kaohsiung area；The second step is a test for the legibility of the numeral typefaces in routes board；The third step is a test for the legibility of type and background colors collocation on routes board . The comparison of the legibility between different ages, lighting enviroment (day and night lighting) and changes of illumination are also made.
The major finds of the study are：
1.The investigation and comparison with numeral typefaces of routes board at the front of the bus in Kaohsiung area: (1) The identical construction on numerals is adopted in many numeral typefaces. 0,3,5,6,8 and 9 are especially composed of the form of ellipse. (2) Both stroke width and width-to-height ratio are not found the significant diversities, but Kaohsiung Transportation Co.,Ltd makes use of the numeral typeface of more bold stroke and low width-to-height ratio than others. (3) The boldface is adopted in most of the numeral typefaces.
2.The legibility of the numeral typefaces in routes board: (1)The most effective legibility of the stroke width-to-height ratio is 1:6. (2) Light stroke width is not to applied to the transparent illumination model of low brightness numeral on high brightness background. (3) Significant differences are found in different numerals and construction of typefaces. (4) The effect of the form on legibility is more significant than stroke width. (5) Significant affect existed in different lighting environment (day ＆ night)and illumination level. (6) Significant differences are found between different-age tests in the viewing distance of effective legibility. (7) The unideal legibility of typeface is resulted largely from the higher similarity between different numerals.
3.The legibility of colors collocation ：(1) Significant differences are founds between elderly and young test in the effective legibility of colors collocation . (2) The most legible colors collocation is white type on blue background. (3) The legibility of colors collocation of high brightness type on low brightness background is most effective selection. (4) Both elderly and young people can be proved with same colors collocation.
