A firm must develop a unique technology resource to acquire more profits in the dynamic environment. How to acquire and utilize technologies more efficiently to manufacture innovative products is undoubtedly the major task for all firms to maintain their own competitive advantages. In addition to the firms’ own resources and capabilities, the environmental factor should be another important one that enterprises need to take into account when they make decisions about the acquisition of technologies in the complicated and variable business environments. The purpose of this study is to find the important factors affecting technology acquisition for information technology industries in Taiwan. Based on the review of related literatures, the technology acquisition modes were divided into three types: in-house R&D, cooperative R&D and market transaction, and the influencing factors were categorized by the environmental factor, technology characteristics factor, motive factor and firm characteristics factor. This study took 312 information-technology related companies in Taiwan as samples for analysis. The methods of questionnaires surveying, analysis of variance and logistics regression analysis were used to find the relationship between technology acquisition modes and influencing factors. Based on research results, it was found that firms with different characteristics placed different degrees of importance on the factors of environment, technology characteristics and motive. Firms would prefer to take in-house R&D to acquire technologies when they were concerned about the factors of technology uncertainty, technology complexity, technology accumulation, technology value, core technology motive, market growth, market intensity, R&D resources and the leader posture in technology. The modes of cooperative R&D and market transaction would be preferred when the factors of technology tacitness, economic motive, social exchange motive, market demand uncertainty, market standardization, pre-experience of technology acquisition, firms’ scale, and the follower and imitator postures in technology were considered.
