Description
Summary:碩士 === 中國醫藥大學 === 中西醫結合研究所 === 92 === Chronic illness has become a major cause of death in elders in Taiwan. The increase in the number of cardiovascular disease patients is significant. Hypercholesterolemia is an important factor that could lead to cardiovascular disease. Prevention and management of hypercholesterolemia reduce the overall health care cost of the society. Lactobacillus or Chinese medical herbs may achieve long-term efficacy in regulating the disease when used as health food in daily life. In this study, we used the hypercholesterolemia animal model of hamster to evaluate the cholesterol-regulatory effect of Lactobacillus gasseri and Yun-Cai-Tea (YCT), which consists of Folium Perilla, Fructus Crataegi, Fructus Mume, Semen Dolichoris, Semen Phaseoli, and Flos Sabdariffa, ingredients that have been taken as medication and as food by Chinese for centuries. In addition, we evaluated whether Chinese medical herbs could be managed as probiotic to elevate growth ability, acid tolerance and bile tolerance of Lactobacillus gasseri by in vitro study. Results of this study find statistical significance as the total cholesterol in serum, the elevation of total cholesterol, the elevation of LDL of high dose lactobacillus group, and the elevation ratio of LDL/HDL of medium and high dose lactobacillus group are lower than that of the placebo group. Moreover, we also find it statistically significant that LDL in serum, the elevation of LDL, the elevation ratio of LDL/HDL in the two YCT groups, and the elevation of total cholesterol in high dose YCT group are all lower than that of the placebo group. Some of Chinese medical herbs with cholesterol regulatory ability can elevate growth, acid tolerance, and bile tolerance of Lactobacillus gasseri. Fructus Crataegi shows the strongest ability to elevate growth of Lactobacillus gasseri; Radix et Rhizoma Rehmanniae acid tolerance, and Rhizoma Alismatis bile tolerance. Further study on the formation of symbiotic should be conducted to investigate what synergic effect the integration of lactobacillus and Chinese medical herbs may contribute to cholesterol regulation.
