Take machine tools industry as an example, it used to depend on fast design change capability to stay competitive in the market. However, due to the trend of high-speed and high-accuracy machining, global competition, rapid market change, mass customization needs, shorter product lifecycle…and so on, the advantage has gradually disappeared. In order to quickly respond to the market and satisfy customer requirements, one of the best ways is to rely on a tight integration of Product Data Management (PDM) system and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system to efficiently manage all of the information from the research, development and design stage to the manufacturing stage during the product life cycle. This research chooses machine tools as the target of case study, because domestic machine tools industry plays an important role in the world, and domestic small and medium businesses in this industry are capable of handling every stage of product life cycle from research and development to manufacturing and assembly. This research takes concurrent engineering and product life cycle as the premises of study, bases on available PDM and ERP systems, and uses Unified Modeling Language (UML) to construct the workflow model. In order to achieve the goal of PDM and ERP integration, the developed Concurrent Engineering Design (CED) module and Bill of Material (BOM) Conversion module are designed such that they are able to support all of the product information demands among all departments. By means of the research results, designers can hopefully be able to review the first-hand design resources in the early design stage. This will lead to better product designs, reduced chances of engineering change, shortened product development cycle, increased usage of common parts, and implemented concept of concurrent engineering. Further, the production, process planning, and sales departments will all be able to acquire related information for daily operation rapidly and accurately. Then, ERP system will be able to offer ideal dataflow process, deliver highest systemic efficiency in all related departments, and fulfill the management framework of unified database during the entire product lifecycle.
