It originated in the age of our ancient ancestors who went hunting just for the purpose of feeding themselves. These two kinds of hunting should not be defined equally on their characteristics. The mature activity of hunting game consists of not only the deeper implication but the multi-faceted performance in accordance with the tiding of time. Early in the time of Yin Shang Dynasty, the activity of hunting game in the loess land had been widely proceeding for a long time. It is stirring that we could learn the assured message from the inscription of the unearthed oracle bones. In spite of the generation-to-generation documents, this monograph is the latest and the most credible material at first hand. To scholars, who are studying the antiquities and Shang Dynasty as well as the Three Dynasty, this material shows the entire sequent culture of hunting game and accordingly reveals the tremendous important and unreplaceable value.
Based on this point, this monograph , by analyzing the inscription itself and combining the strenuous efforts of the previous researchers, would restore the general aspects of the activities during the age of Shang Dynasty. According to the difference of themes, the content is divided into seven chapters. The first chapter, as a foundation, set up a general direction of assertion by way of plotting properly the objective and method of the research. The second chapter is a general description of the activities of hunting game in ancient China. It is an overall discussion on both the integration of generation-to-generation documents with the modern materials and the attempt at explaining the hunting activity in the vague time of human being in contrast to the traditional hunting game activities since the Three Dynasty.
The inscription of oracle bones as a main structure, the third chapter presents an analysis for each aspect to every kind of hunting game inscription. At the mercy of controlling the context, it is feasible to get more important message showing on the hunting game inscriptions themselves. The fourth chapter has a discussion on the method of hunting game. Every kind of the methods shown on the inscription of Shang Dynasty is come up for discussion one by one. The fifth chapter is an investigation into every kind of the animals and the climate environment of Shang Dynasty. And with the orderly lists of local names of place, I try to postulate , by the help of the categorical classification of materials, that I would be able to observe more closely to grasp the whole structure of reality of Shang Dynasty.
The sixth chapter is conclusion. The attached graphs and relative charts of activity of hunting game are the reference and supplement at the end.
