Summary: | 碩士 === 輔仁大學 === 應用美術學系碩士班 === 92 === “Hao-Mang Carving”is also called“ Miniature Carving”; it has a very long history. “Hao” and “Mang” refer to things that are very tiny. Therefore, we define “Miniature Carving” as a sculpture which is carved on very tiny materials or larger ones, such as rice, or a fingernail. The strokes which create the characters or drawings are as thin as a hair, and can’t be seen clearly without using a magnifying glass. Because the miniature carving is a very detailed and difficult to do, the artist must have exceptional concentration and patience. Currently miniature carving is not in popular demand.
This paper focuses on miniature carving in Taiwan, as done by five accomplished artists, Huang Lao-fen、Lou Yung-yu、Hsiao Wu-Lung、Lou Fei-hsin、and Chen Forng-shean, and their creative experiences. It discusses with four main subjects. First, it is unique, the only miniature carving in the kind. Second, the miniature space used by sculptor to create the carving’s own world will be discussed. Third, this paper examines the use of special tools and materials in creating the carving. Fourth, the effect of passion, determination and religious belief and their impact the artwork will be examined. And last, it discusses the miniature carving and aesthetic thinking.
The miniature carving is one form of artistic expression .It not only works for tiny carvings, but also the artist must have an imaginative sense and inspired technique for his craft. Artists must carve out the creation with his skilled hands, which is the main reason that the miniature carving is so difficult to popularize in the art world. Every miniature carving sculptor has the virtues of patience as well as a mind capable of striving for the best of his carving. Artists can express their unlimited aesthetic essence these rare art works.
